Hi, I recently inherited several pieces of Iron Mountain Whispering Pines from my great grandmothers house, the pitcher, large bowl, and tea pot have what looks like crazing on them, is this common for these items or was the glazing that was used on the outside of these pieces suppose to have this effect in it? The areas that I’m inquiring about don’t look like crazing that you would see on really old piece of china that have a “web like” crazing, the areas that I’m inquiring about are long lines, only the bottom of one of the items is similar to the “web” crazing, these areas do not soak up water either, they are on the outside of the items I’ve found none on the inside. I realize that these items are supposed to have a vintage look to them but I wasn’t sure if this was part of that effect too.
It is common for all types of stoneware and anything else with a graze to craze. I have several pieces with some light crazing which does not bother me. However, if the crazing is dark and discolored I tend to avoid them. Stoneware does not leak water from areas which are not covered in glaze by the way--so that is why they don't leak.
I just wanted to let you know that a couple years ago I found a Whispering Pines chop platter in a thrift shop. I didn't know at the time what it was, but I knew it was worth the $3.oo price tag. When I got home with it, I found the IMS mark on the bottom; but I still didn't know what the pattern was. I went to the computer and started to search. I absolutely love the piece. It has become one of my most prized possessions.
I was given a set of IMS from my Dad. I remember erwin eating off these as a child. 10 saucers, 7 salad plates 6 dinner plates, 1 large mug (maybe for coffee or soup) and 6 small Coffee cups. We just moved and are now using these in my home. I look forward to the day I can pass these to my children. I live that pieces such as these can hold so many memories and make so many smile. Very blessed to have them and would love to slowly add pieces in the future.
I have a 10" plate that looks very similar to the Winterlight pattern but includes the words "voici les bois" (Here the woods). On the back it has the IMS mark and flame/NP signature and is also inscribed "Angleton Boise 1969-1979 #2 of 100". Can you give me anymore information about this plate? Thank you.
Hello, Allison, I made the plates at the request of Hugh Angleton, owner of Angleton's in Boise. I'm not sure now, after so many years, but I believe he ordered them for a company that had something to do with lumbering. I visited the store several times in the 70's and 80's putting on demonstrations with Iron Mountain products.
Dear Nancy Lamb, I'm so glad to see your name! I am Margaret van Gelder's daughter, and am passing some of my Martha's Flowers to my niece Martha (Margaret's granddaughter) who lived next door to Mother on Bainbridge Island, WA, and some Roan Mountain to my niece Marion in Alaska as I downsize for a retirement home. They are so precious that I'm glad they are staying in the family. One of my favorite photos of my parents is one I took inside your shop/factory years ago!

Hi Ms. Lamb, I have a large collection of Whispering Pines that I use every day in my house. Most of the pieces were passed down to me from my parents who purchased them new I think in the early 70's. They even saved the literature and correspondence with IMS. I have found a few pieces on E-Bay, etc. to supplement my collection. I love this stoneware and thought you would like to know it will be serving its purpose for many more years to come!
