Over the Hills

A large collection of Over the Hills
Over the Hills (and Under the Sun) is another pattern which drew upon the natural surroundings of the area where Iron Mountain Stoneware was located.  The fanciful glazing pattern of brown, beige and green on this set of stoneware displays rolling hills covered with simple tree shapes--varying shades of brown and the lack of a glossy glaze over the entire surface left the stoneware with a different, yet earthy feel.  In 1988, this collection was listed as one of the mid-priced groupings.  The price list indicated that the stoneware was sold in either 5-piece place settings, 16-piece places settings, 20-piece place settings up to the largest group--the 45-piece service for eight.  The largest service of 45 pieces contained 11" dinner plates, 8" salad plates, 6" soup/cereal bowls, and cups with saucers.  It also included a 12" platter, an 8" vegetable bowl, a covered sugar and creamer.

  1. I am the very happy owner of a very large collection of this pattern including a wide variety of serving pieces. I put Evergreen pieces into the collection, too---THAT is REALLY hard to find, especially the deep, rich green pieces.

  3. Dear Carol in KY
I don't post offers to sell in here as a rule--but will offer you the same courtesy as Betsy seen above. Please contact me directly so we can discuss what you have (numbers and pieces in patterns) and I will connect you with people who collect these patterns whom I know. Your information will be private except for the individuals known to me personally. [vatechnoteacher@gmail.com]

  4. I just purchased two serving pieces of Iron Mountain Over the Hills, but the glossy section is gray rather than brown. All the other design details match Over the Hills. Is it a variation of the same pattern or a different pattern? It is a large pitcher and a covered souffle.

    1. hello - yes, I know what you're describing as I have a piece or two like that myself. It is Over the Hills. The variation is due to differing amounts of minerals in the glaze or temperature variations during firing. Since these pieces were all glazed by hand, there will be some variations. This does not detract from the beauty of the piece or its functionality.

  5. Hi Katie - I already wrote in the blog that I have a set of about 20 photos of folks making Over the Hills at the Laurel Bloomery plant around 1980. I'd like to get them to this site somehow, please let me know if you would like them.

  6. Hello, if there are any additional pieces available, I am very interested in adding to our collection. I have an entire set of the Roan Mountain pattern, but I absolutely love the design of the over the hills. The stoneware quality is incredible!
